Is your handbags, lipstick, shoes, soap and many other things that you use in everyday life Halal ?. What... ?This is the issue that my friend ask me while we having a breakfast at mamak coffee shop yesterday. Do I need to ensure that all the handbags, lipstick, shoes, soap is Halal ?. So what Halal means ?. Halal is an Arabic word meaning lawful or permitted. The opposite of Halal is Haram, which means unlawful or prohibited. Halal and Haram are universal terms that apply to all facets of life. However, we will use these terms only in relation to food products, meat products, cosmetics, personal care products, food ingredients, and food contact materials.
While many things are clearly Halal or clearly Haram, there are some things which are not clear. These items are considered questionable or suspect and more information is needed to categorize them as Halal or Haram. Such items are often referred to as Mashbooh, which means doubtful or questionable.
Some of the Haram food or products are;
1. Swine/pork and its by-products
2. Animals improperly slaughtered or dead before slaughtering
3. Animals killed in the name of anyone other than ALLAH (God)
4. Alcohol and intoxicant
5. Blood and blood by-products
6. Foods contaminated with any of the above products
7. Foods containing ingredients such as gelatin, enzymes, emulsifiers, etc. because the origin of these ingredients is not known.
Now a day because we are living in industrial, technology and business age, anything have been churned into money. So what does it means ?. Yup..industry are producing anything to make more - more money. So what..In order to make thing clear, I give you an example. Lets say in beef production. The cow will be slaughtered, meat will be sold as a meat. The cow skin being sold as a leather to make leather jacket, shoes. The cow fat that have been skim from the meat being used in production of soap. The bone...some said being process to produce calcium. Bones are rich in calcium !. This calcium being used in toothpaste and many other product.
Some of the bones being grinding into power and this power being added to meat burger and many other food. So you see from a cow it and been turned into many things. Even cow doug also been processed to something. How about if the animals is pig ?.
Pig skin being used to make shoe cover and also hand bag !.Why?.Because pig skin is soft and being used in shoe making so that it gave soft feel to one's feet.mm.Even pig hairs have been used to make paint brush and many other brush. There a case in our country some cake shop using pig brush to put the icing on the cake !.
The issue of Halal products is very sensitive for the Muslim. Therefore there a need for Halal certification of all products especially food and many others such as handbag, shoes, lipstick, food supplement, vitamin, paint brush, meat.
Why we need Halal certification For the consumer, the benefits of Halal certification are clear: knowing a product is Halal certified means they don’t have to bother checking all the ingredients. They can purchase the product with the assurance it does not contain anything that is haram or doubtful.
What about the producer? What benefits do they receive from Halal certification? Actually, the benefits for the producer are just as great. Halal certificate has worldwide acceptance. From Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore, to Saudi Arabia, the UAE and the rest of the Middle East, through Europe and North and South America., have delighted and satisfied consumers. Once the product is certified, permission is granted to display the certification logo, on the product packaging and label. This is a valuable assurance that the product is an authentic Halal certified product. So what does all this things means ?. It means the product can easily gain Muslim consumer confident thus creating more markets potential for those products. It means more money to the producer.
Therefore beside the already good brand, the Halal certification can act as a co-Branded to the products pulling more consumer !.
